We may have thought we wanted a woman on a national political ticket, but the joke has really been on us, hasn’t it? Are you as sick in your stomach as I am at the thought of Sarah Palin as Vice President of the United States ?
Since Palin gave her speech accepting the Republican nomination for the Vice Presidency, Barack Obama’s campaign has raised over $10 million dollars. Some of you may already be supporting the Obama campaign financially; others of you may still be a little honked off over the primaries. None of you, however, can be happy with Palin’s selection, especially on her positions on women’s issues. So, if you feel you can’t support the Obama campaign financially, may I suggest the following fiendishly brilliant alternative?
Make a donation to Planned Parenthood
or NARAL- Pro Choice

in my work with charitable giving, i am always very careful to check out where my sacred tzedakah shekels are going. and so, even if an organization is ‘doing good things’ or even ‘doing the right thing’, it doesn’t mean that they know how to use my tzedakah shekels.
so i looked up planned parenthood online:

and i find that they have a $67,000,000 a year budget. wow. and that 23% of it goes for overhead (salaries, fundraising, admin, etc.). wow. the ceo earns over $325,000 a year. wow.
if you can find an organization that uses funds more efficiently, then i will happily make a contribution as you wish. but i can not give to PP as they operate now.

I agree with Arnie Draiman that we should be very careful with our tzedaka. I’ve realized this more through my work at Olam Hatorah which is an online database of Torah and Chesed institutions. The URL is http://www.torahindex.com and if you want check out the charities that give their all to supporting families with newborns.
This is great. I especially love her receiving the card saying it was made in her honor. I wish I had a little extra funds.
@ arnie, if you compare Planned Parenthood with other charities, you’ll see that their operating expenses are not high. PP spends 10% on admin. The American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and Breast Cancer Action are in that same expense category. For a non profit to run, they need to raise funds. Don’t confuse a high budget with a lack of need for support!
These orgs put the money they raise to use supporting programs that help those who need it. Remember, Planned Parenthoods around the country offer free or low-cost health services to those who can’t afford to pay for them — those services are subsidized by the organization itself. The more money they raise, the more people they can help.
